The Heroines

Gladys Alley

is honored with a Brick from Buck Alley.

This history is going to start basically at the time I met Gladys Alley in August of 1975, shortly after she had graduated from Wichita State University with a B.S. in Nursing. She had gone back to school as a single mother. When we met, she had just passed her state board examination and was an RN at Wesley Medical Center. Buck Alley and Gladys Sawatzky were married that same year on November 29.

In the last 20 years, Gladys has been very active as a loyal RN at Wesley Medical Center and at Charter Hospital. She is now retired, but is active doing volunteer work in the community. She volunteers at Venture House, works in the gift shop at the Historical Museum, serves on the Vestry at St. Stephen's Church, and is very active at the WSU Alumni Association. A former music major, she enjoys singing in the Wichita Symphony Chorus. She loves working at the Alumni Association where she serves on the board of directors and is active on numerous committees there, such as the annual auction. She has received Volunteer of the Year award, and, in 1996, received the Alumni Recognition Award. She is the mother of three children and has four grandchildren.

Needless to say, that August blind date Gladys and I had ended up to be one of the most wonderful and blessed things that could have happened to us.
