The Heroines

Shirley D. Kellogg

is honored with a Brick from Randy Crump and family, Roxanne Kellogg, Kevin and Debbie Kellogg and family, and Brett and Sandy Kellogg and family.

Shirley Darlene Kellogg, nee Hillyer, was born April 19, 1931, to Clarence and Evelyn Hillyer in Reserve, near Hiawatha, in northeastern Kansas. Shirley and her sister, Donna Lee, were raised on the farm but moved into town to live with friends when they started high school. She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1949 and one of her classmates was Darrell D. Kellogg, her future husband. They were married in September, 1953, then Shirley returned to nursing school at KU Med Center in Kansas City, and Darrell was off to San Antonio to enter basic training for the Air Force. After Darrell completed law school, he and Shirley arrived in Wichita in 1959 and made it their home.

Shirley is "Mom" to Roxanne, Kevin and Brett, born 1955, 1957 and 1959 respectively. She later became a mother-in-law to Randy, Debbie and Sandy. And finally, she became "Nanny" to ten grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Lindsay, Jessica and Spencer (Roxanne and Randy); Stacy and Kimberly (Kevin and Debbie); and Angie, Brian, Becky, Russell and Laura (Brett and Sandy).

Shirley's life is rich with friends as well as family and she nurtures fiercely loyal friendships, some that are decades long. People naturally feel comfortable around Shirley what with her engaging sense of humor and kind nature. Her title of "Life of the Party" in high school is an understatement!

Shirley's family honors her with a brick on Mother's Day 1998 to show how very much we love and appreciate who she is and all she does for us. Not only is she our mother and grandmother but also our friend and confidant. When Darrell died in 1992, Shirley carried on the traditions and maintained the stability that enables us to remain a close-knit family. She is fun to be around and we enjoy her company. We thank her for her devotion to us and send our love to her this Mother's Day and every day.
