The Heroines

Kathleen Walsh

is honored with a Medium Paver from Carol Hill.

Kathleen Walsh Many people teach but only a very few can be honored with the title "Teacher." Kathleen Walsh is such a teacher. She was nurtured by parents, both fine educators, she set high standards for learning in the classroom, and she had many "firsts" in her professional life, such as first woman chairman of the Kansas State Teachers' Board of Directors. With her father, she wrote The Plain English Handbook, used in classrooms around the world and within reach on private bookshelves of many who respect language.

A true teacher never retires, and the results of Kathleen Walsh's influence goes beyond the extended lives of her former students. She has established three fine scholarships at Wichita State University, in English, Humanities, and Education in her own name and in honor of her parents--J. Martyn Walsh and Anna K. Walsh. And with her endowment, the library at the new Heartspring facility will be named for the long-time librarian at the Institute of Logopedics, a man encouraged to pursue his education by her father.

Kathleen Walsh is personally interested in each of the young scholars selected to receive a Walsh scholarship, and her belief in learning and in young people will long perpetuate her role as a true Teacher and Heroine of Wichita State University.
