The Heroines

Josephine B. Fugate

is honored with a Brick from Betty Holmer.

 Josephine B. Fugate
A heroine is defined as a woman of distinguished performance and admired for her excellent personal qualities.
Josephine's role in the history of Wichita State University is prominent. First, as the second woman to ever be appointed to the Wichita University's Board of Regents. As such, she played an active part in helping establish Harry Corbin as President of Wichita University. From 1953 to 1970 Josephine served as Dean of Women at the University and so touched the lives of countless students in a positive and enlightened way.
After her tenure as Dean of Women concluded, Josephine continued to serve the University as a teacher in the Department of mathematics. Her love of this field and her advocacy of the value of education influenced hundreds of students.
In addition to her distinguished performance with the University, Josephine is admired for her splendid personal qualities. Qualities such as compassion, a progressive perspective and a loving devotion to her family and friends. Her love of travel and the game of bridge are just two examples of her wold-wide interests and continuing astuteness.
In honoring Josephine, I also honor my mother, Tamar Kester, whom Josephine emulated. It is my hope that I can live up to their examples.
