The Heroines

Rose Mary Mohr

is honored with a Medium paver from Mental Health Association South Central Kansas

Rose Mary Corkle Mohr was born April 12, 1936 in Tilden, Nebraska, the eldest of twelve children, to James Michael and Blanche Rose Corkle. Her family moved from Tilden to Sargent, and then to O’Neill, NE, where she and her siblings attended St. Mary’s Academy. She graduated from St. Mary’s in 1953 as valedictorian of her class. In 1953 she enrolled at Saint Mary College in Leavenworth, Kansas and graduated in 1957, with a Bachelors degree in Music Education, and double majors in music and English.
Rose Mary taught music in the public schools of Battle Creek, NE from 1957-58. On August 16, 1958 she married Bernard M. Mohr at St. Patrick’s Church, O’Neill, NE. Following their marriage, Bernard and Rose Mary moved to Wichita, KS, where they both attended Wichita State University and were employed at the Institute of Logopedics. Rose Mary graduated in 1966 with a Masters degree in Education Psychology and Bernard with a Masters degree in Speech Pathology.
Bernard and Rose Mary are the parents of four children, including Anne Patrice Corriston, Celia Kay Volk, Christopher D. Mohr, and Erin D. Aldana. They have nine grandchildren.
In 1974, Rose Mary was encouraged by her employers at the Institute to pursue doctoral studies. As a parent of four children and the Director of Education, she had special needs that were best addressed through Walden University, in Naples, Florida. Through summer study, coordinated with Wichita University, she completed doctoral classes and her dissertation in 1976.
In 1979 Rose Mary was hired as the Executive Director for what was then the Mental Health Association of Sedgwick County, as one of three employees. After several years, the MHA of Sedgwick County became the Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas, thus expanding its outreach capabilities. She is quite proud of the leadership team that has been developed at the Mental Health Association. Having progressed from a staff of three (3) to a staff of over 350 can only occur successfully with development of a strong infrastructure and a dedicated team of staff members, in conjunction with the leadership and support of the Board of Directors. In their shared efforts, the Mental Health Association has achieved accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), and is dedicated to providing services of the highest quality.
Rose Mary is a past chair of the American Association of Mental Health Association Professionals (ASMHAP) and of the Governor’s Mental Health Services Planning Council (GMHSPC). She serves as a member of the Alumna Board of the University of Saint Mary and of the Kansas Mental Health Coalition. She is also a member of the Wichita Rotary Club. She and Bernard are members of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. Rose Mary values her family and associates for the love and support they give in making her work possible and successful.
