Penelope Moss

Honored by Max Moss
The gift of hospitality, the gift of teaching the next generation, the gift of service…these are just a few of the expressions of the selfless giving that Penelope “Penny” Moss has bestowed on her family and others. Born and raised in the Midwest, Penny has been a truly, loyal Kansan. The strong ties she and her husband have to the Kansas State University, their alma mater where she received a degree in Elementary Education, have bestowed upon them wonderful friendships and sports memories.
During her college years, Penny was an enthusiastic Wildcat cheerleader while following her husband Max’s basketball team as they went on to the NCAA final four tournament against UCLA. Her enthusiasm for sports brought about her competitive spirit and desire to work at her own skills in athletics despite growing up in an era where there were few organized opportunities for women. Penny has developed a love for tennis and golf, and has displayed an incredible attitude to overcome obstacles despite injuries and setbacks. Such a great inspiration for her two daughters and their children.
Penny had amazingly maintained friendships from her school days across the miles from family relocations. She has fond memories as an Air Force Captain’s wife stationed on the East coast, and later when her husband worked as a veterinarian, she enjoyed assisting and getting to know the wonderful clients. Her life has been a role model for developing relationships that can stand the test of time and distance which makes the world a smaller place. Connecting with people and genuinely taking interest in getting to know her neighbors and others in the community at large is a special trait. Especially rare today as people tend to have less time to make the extra effort for relationships.
Travel is definitely one of Penny’s passions. Maybe it is the gift her grandfather instilled in her as he traveled the country as a hotelier/entrepreneur. The stories he shared and her own love for reading from a young age stirred a desire in Penny to see the world. Through the years, she has enjoyed learning more about the cultures and places near and dear to the people and places she visits. When at home, she has enjoyed being a member of gourmet group and women’s culinary club. This has stirred her passion to experiment with new recipes from a variety of places. Penny has truly been a welcoming hostess for a variety of people in her home.
Penny’s generous service and giving of her time to a variety of volunteer programs such as Junior League of Wichita, Pi Beta Phi sorority, PEO, her church, and her own re-entering the workforce is invaluable. She also enjoys substitute teaching—especially middle school.
Currently, Penny devotes much of her time and energy to cherishing her four grandchildren by instilling values and providing memorable experiences in their lives. The special occasions in life such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and holidays are always a cause for celebration and Penny makes sure no accomplishment is forgotten. Penny’s faithfulness to her husband and family is an ever-present reminder of how precious time spent with those most dear to us is and how every day counts. “Family first” could be her motto. The legacy of her own parent’s steadfast and true marriage for 70 years is testimony of the life that can be shared with a true love while overcoming any obstacle. Thank you Penny for sharing your gifts with us. Your life is truly a present.
